Theoretical Calculations for Mechanistic Investigation

Room temperature phosphorescence(RTP) has long been considered as a challenge although RTP systems are desirable because of their tailorability and availability. Recently, Huili Ma and Qian Peng, in cooperate with Prof. BenZhong Tang from Hong Kong University of Science & Technology, comprehensively investigated on molecular orbitals which revealed that an excited state with hybrid (n,π*) and (π,π*) configurations in appreciable proportion is ideal in RTP systems, rationally designed and synthesized pure organic RTP molecules that stay excited and emit light for up to 230 ms. These molecules are potentially three times more efficient than a fluorescent organic LED. This work is highlighted recently by C&EN, Science Daily and Xinhua News(see links below).
